Full dissertation available online

On December 4th, just before turning 30, I publicly defended my PhD thesis One style fits all? The content, origins, and effect of follower expectations of ethical leadership at the VU University in Amsterdam. And what a great day it was!
In my dissertation, I explore the various implicit theories that followers have of ethical leadership and examine their relation to their work context and more specifically their role and tasks in the organization.

Dissertation results: A sneak preview

On 4 December 2014, I will publicly defend my PhD thesis titled One style fits all? A study on the content, effect, and origins of follower expectations of ethical leadership at the VU University Amsterdam.

In my dissertation, I study the range of followers’ assumptions, beliefs, and expectations of ethical leaders and leadership (i.e., their implicit ethical leadership theories) and examine how these relate to structural characteristics of their work environment and to their subsequent perceptions of a leader’s behavior. Interested in the results? Check out the summary in English or in Dutch. The full thesis will be published as a book later this year.

Seminar Integrity, Investigation and Ethical Leadership at IG-MoF Indonesia

As part of a follow-up of the Tailor Made Training ‘Investigative Audit’, the Inspectorate General Ministry of Finance (IG-MoF) in Jakarta, Indonesia recently organized a seminar on Integrity, Investigation and Ethical Leadership for  leaders, auditors, HR and other personnel from different ministries and functions throughout the Indonesian government. The seminar covered many issues related to compliance and integrity, and provided ample information about topics such as digital forensic investigation, fraud risk management, and whistle-blowing. As the title of the seminar suggests, ethical leadership was a central part of the program as well and I had the honor of presenting some of my own research-based insights on this.
IMG_4073-2The day after the seminar, I gave a workshop for 50 employees of IG-MoF itself. This interactive workshop centered around how to deal with ethical dilemmas and how to incorporate ethical leadership in your own, everyday decisions and actions. It resulted in some interesting discussions that highlighted  both cross-cultural similarities as well as specific cultural challenges to fostering with ethics and ethical leadership in organizations. All in all, both the seminar and the workshop proved to be very worthwhile learning experiences –for both the participants and myself.
Many thanks to IG-MoF Indonesia, the VU University Center for International Cooperation (CIS), and Nuffic-Neso Indonesia for making this collaboration possible!

New book: Achieving Ethical Competency for Public Service Leadership

The book Achieving Ethical Competency for Public Service Leadership is finally here! Edited by the esteemed Terry L. Cooper and Donald C. Menzel, this edited volume shows students as well as professionals in the public service field how to become ethically competent to provide the leadership needed to advance the public interest. Specifically, the book aims to answer three central questions:
– What does it mean to be ethically competent?
– How does one achieve a satisfactory level of ethical competence?
– How does ethical competence contribute to effective public service leadership?
In a co-authored chapter in the book, Karin Lasthuizen and myself address the relationship between ethical competency and ethical leadership. Other chapters address issues such as the definition and conceptualization of ethical competency (De Schrijver and Maesschalck), the development and advancement of ethical competence (Jacobs, Jurkiewicz, resp.), and ethical competency in specific fields such as social work (Reamer) and public administration (Plant). For more information about the book, a complete overview of its chapters and ordering information, please visit the M.E. Sharpe website.

What’s the Difference? Ethical Leadership in Public, Hybrid and Private Sector Organizations

Karin and mine article “What’s the difference? Ethical leadership in public, hybrid, and private sector organizations” is  now published online in the Journal of Change Management! The article reports on a small-scale interview study we conducted among Dutch public, hybrid, and private sector managers as a first exploration of the possible similarities and differences in ethical leadership across different sectors. See below for the abstract or click here to visit the Journal of Change Management website.
Abstract
Is there one best practice for ethical leadership? Studies suggest that the publicness of an organization can have important implications for leadership. Yet research on ethical leadership generally assumes that one ethical leadership style should fit all types of organization alike. This study explores the validity of that assumption by using qualitative interviews to unravel similarities and differences in how Dutch public, hybrid and private sector managers conceive ethical leadership. The results suggest that most aspects of ethical leadership may be transferable across public and private sectors. However, in comparison with their private sector counterparts, the managers operating in public and hybrid sector organizations placed greater value on being altruistic, showing concern for the common good, and being responsive, transparent and accountable to society at large. Moreover, whereas public and hybrid sector managers considered explicit and frequent communication about ethics to be a key component of ethical leadership, most of the private sector managers preferred communication strategies in which ethics was more implicitly embedded in discussions of, for instance, ‘the business model’ or ‘customer relationships’. The results suggest further research on the contingencies of ethical leadership views and practices across different types of organizations is warranted.
